As a Utah family photographer, I’m constantly trying to improve my skill and elevate the experience that I offer to families. Over the weekend I had the opportunity to attend a family photography workshop put on by Amy Simpson. We learned how to take more candid photos and capture connection during family sessions. Amy is an incredible photographer and teacher and I learned so much! After the education portion we headed over to the Utah State Capitol to photograph two different families. The weather had been pretty touch-and-go all day and we were fighting against wind and rain for most of the session. However, these families absolutely rocked it and I’m obsessed with these photos!
The first family has three beautiful daughters, two of them being twins. I had such a blast photographing them and their energy was so infectious! You can tell this family loves each other so much! In an effort to make sure the family was out of there quickly, we had to divide and conquer the different shot combinations. Despite the fact that I wasn’t able to capture every grouping, I was so happy with the results of this session. I can’t wait to implement the things I learned with my own family sessions in the coming months.
I do love (and will always include) those traditional smiling at the camera shots. However, my main focus of every family session is to capture the candid, organic moments between family members. My job is to help those moments happen with fun prompts and strategic placement. I want to freeze those moments of genuine joy and love. After all, your family is perfect exactly how they are.
